Folder   “Smarter Law for Smart Surveillance” — Brussels 4 and 5 March 2014

The “Smarter Law for Smart Surveillance” conference will be held in Brussels next March 4 and 5 2014. The Conference is organised in the context of the SMART Project (including Laboratorio di Scienze della Cittadinanza as a partner), financed by the European Commission under FP7. SMART addresses the questions of automated decision taking with respect to the “smart surveillance” technologies in a society where privacy and data protection are fundamental rights. The conference will examine and discuss the risks and opportunities that are posed by smart surveillance. The event brings together experts from different fields and perspectives including policy-makers, law enforcement practitioners, academia and citizen groups. In the conference, which will feature a diversity of invited speakers, the research outcomes of the SMART project, including the policy toolkit and model law, and peer-reviewed studies will be presented. The topics discussed will include: Governance issues of big data; Smart surveillance in law enforcement; Right to be forgotten and right to erasure; Surveillance and cybersecurity; Living under surveillance (psychology, sociology); Economics of surveillance; Cross-border issues in smart surveillance; Democracy and surveillance. The Keynote speaker will be Jan Philipp Albrecht, Member of the European Parliament and rapporteur for the new Data Protection Regulation. Daniele Mezzana will participate on behalf of LSC, with a paper on "Making the wheel spin: social agency and law in the field of smart surveillance", in collaboration with Marija Krlic (University of Sheffield).
