The first Think Think Tank Event of the MINET (Measuring the Impossible NETwork) project, funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme of Scientific and Technological Research, took place at the Technical University of Berlin last April 13th. Laboratorio di Scienze della Cittadinanza partecipated as member organisation of the project consortium, which includes 22 universities and research centres from various European countries. Researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds (physicists, psychologist, engineers, sociologists, mathematicians) discussed measurement concepts and terminology in various fields and their possible harmonisation. The need was stressed for metrology – the discipline which deals with measurement both in the scientific and in the legal and industrial field – to extend its scope beyond physical sciences, where it had origin, to include other natural sciences as well as social and psychological sciences. Although complete harmonisation is probably impossible to reach, an effort should be made in this direction, in order to facilitate interdisciplinary research collaboration and communication between scientists, policy makers and the public. Metrology should adapt its conceptual and terminological apparatus in order to encompass the measurement of multidimensional and complex phenomena (like most social phenomena are) and measurement which is mediated by human perception and interpretation.
