CARISMAND – CULTURE AND RISK MANAGEMENT IN MAN–MADE AND NATURAL DISASTERS

Laboratory of Citizenship Sciences (LSC) is partner of the CARISMAND project "Culture And RISk Management in Man-Made And Natural Disasters" (Action GA no. 653748), funded by the European Union under Horizon 2020 and coordinated by the University Groningen.

The overall objective of CARISMAND is to understand how the cultural background of individuals and society affects people’s capacity to prepare for disasters and react to them by restoring the situation prior to the event. The project moves from the idea that risks are of a social and cultural nature rather than objective facts which are independent from human action. In this sense a conscious approach to disaster management, able to respect and use the elements of local culture, could be not only more effective but also capable to increase the capacity of local communities to cope with natural disasters.

Within the project, LSC is responsible for Work Package 7 (WP7) "Citizens' empowerment" the objective of which is to explore the implications of cultural aspects in strengthening the preparedness of citizens, individuals and communities, to efficiently react to disasters; to favour and speed up the process of restoring the situation prior to the event as well as; to propose recommendations to the authorities in order to enhance disaster management.
