SCIENCE AND SOCIETY |
The LSC believes that science and technology both play a fundamental role in determining the social, economic and political fates of societies. Its research activity, in particular, starts from the assumption that society, science and technology develop within a single co-evolutionary process. However, the awareness of this link on the part of public opinion, decision-makers and scientists themselves is still low and does not produce suitable orientations and policies. This “hypo-socialisation” of scientific and technological research is a serious risk, in a global context in which knowledge is a strategic factor of economic and social growth. The LSC pays particular attention to this risk, also with a view to an effective governance of research.
Moreover, the LSC aims to promote a strong role of sociology within what is being increasingly perceived as a single scientific field that includes all the investigation areas, from those of natural sciences to those of social sciences.
On these issues, LSC is carrying out some projects funded within the 6 and 7 Framework Research Programme of the European Union: BESST - Breakthrough in European Ship and Shipbuilding Technologies; FUTURAGE - A Definitive Road-Map for Ageing Research in Europe.
Furthermore, LSC promoted and created an e-magazine titled European Synthesis .
