WISE INTEGRATION

In cooperation with the Higher Institute for Labour Studies – Leuven (BE) and the Verwey-Jonkers Instituut – Utrecht (NL), the LSC carried out the project entitled "Skilled Migrants Integration Assessment Model" (SMIAM), with funding from the European Commission – DG for Justice, Freedom and Security.

The project was organised as an action-research one and aimed to develop and disseminate a model for evaluating the degree of integration of skilled migrants in European countries.

Evaluation of the integration process of skilled migrants must be made by starting from the consideration that it is not a monodimensional, static and isolated phenomenon, but rather a specific moment of a broader process of migration, consisting of many stages ranging from the plan to the decision to migrate; from the “journey” to the entry in the new country; from coming to terms with the reality to integration; up to a possible return to the country of origin. Moreover, integration is a complex process since it stems from the action of various social actors and the interaction between different spheres and dimensions of the reality which the immigrants find themselves in.

The project involved three kinds of activity:

- A study in 8 European countries that led to defining and experimenting the Skilled Migrants Integration Assessment Model (SMIAM).
- Networking, by promoting the http://scienzecittadinanza.org/public/Smen_engl.htm[blue]Skilled Migrations European Network (SMEN), a network of researchers, sector workers and representatives of immigrants’ associations active in the field of evaluation of integration processes.
- Public communication activities.
